About AH&LEF
The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF) is the not-for-profit, charitable-giving, and fund-raising affiliate of the American Hotel & Lodging Association's (AH&LA). Created by a group of forward thinking hoteliers in 1953, the Foundation initially focused on providing management scholarships to a small group of promising hospitality students. Over the past half-century, the vision has expanded and the Foundation has taken on a much greater mandate: ensuing a strong and viable future for the entire lodging industry.

Why Your Support is Essential
AH&LEF is building tomorrow's hotel industry - and the talent to fuel it. In our increasingly complex business, research and education are crucial to ensuring the lodging industry continues to thrive.
Who's safeguarding lodging's future? The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation. Since its inception, AH&LEF's research program has awarded more than $2.4 million in grants to address critical areas such as room taxes, technology, ADA requirements, and energy management. And we've invested more than $6.5 million in attracting, educating, and keeping the best talent. Last year alone, you enabled us to spend almost $1 million on scholarships, educational, and research programs to foster a viable outlook for lodging.
The industry can't prosper without us - and we can't operate without you. The Foundation's Core Missions
The Foundation's identifies, cultivates, and supports the human talent, research, and initiatives most vital to the progress and prosperity of the lodging industry. Its reach extends to all facets of the industry, from workforce development to studies on the impact of room taxes as well as turnover and diversity issues. Combining all educational, research, and outreach programs, the Foundation distributed almost $1 million in 2007 through the following programs:
- scholarships: cultivating future leaders
Since its inception, AH&LEF has invested approximately $6.5 million in attracting, educating, and keeping the best talent. Last year, the Foundation distributed more than $475,000 in scholarship and outreach educational programs to more than 350 students and hospitality professionals. At 91 schools across the country, we awarded more than 300 academic scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000. Professional development scholarships are also offered to current hotel employees wishing to take distance learning or professional certification through the Educational Institute of AH&LA. Additional educational programs include scholarships for hospitality management students to attend national industry conferences, as well as funding for partner state associations such as ISHAE's Annual Winter Conference and scholarships for state executives to attend the Institute for Organizational Management and AH&LA's Membership Recruitment and Retention Workshop. - scholar's alumni association: keeping our scholars' careers on track
The Foundation supported hospitality management students when they were in school. And, the Foundation wants to help keep their careers on track after graduation through the Scholars Alumni Association (SAA). The SAA was created exclusively for AH&LEF scholarship recipients to assist former scholars advance their hospitality careers and promote them as "future hospitality leaders" to the industry. Benefits are free to all past AH&LEF scholars. The only requirement is that they keep the Foundation updated on their career progress. Click here to visit the SAA section.
- looking forward: funding essential research
The Foundation's research program addresses critical issues such as room tax, ADA requirements, and technology advancement. Since 1995, more than $2.4 million has been disbursed to provide information that benefits the industry. - school-to-career programs - building tomorrow's workforce
Through EI's Lodging Management Program (LMP), high school students can preview the wide array of attractive careers in lodging, and gain hands-on experience leading to professional placement. To-date the LMP has been implemented in 46 states, with more than 7,000 students enrolled at over 575 high schools. For more information click here.
- workforce development initiatives - securing lodging's future
Managers in the hotel industry cite securing its workforce as one of their most pressing concerns. In response, AH&LEF created a $3 million endowment dedicated to developing and supporting programs that encourage employees to remain in the hospitality industry.
