Arthur J Packard Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship honors Arthur J. Packard, who never waited for the lodging industry to ask him to volunteer his time and boundless energy. A third-generation hotelier, his work for AH&LA extended over 30 years -- one of the longest on record. The Packard Competition provides scholarships to the most outstanding student of lodging management and to two runners-up through an annual competition among Foundation affiliated four-year programs.
Each university nominates its best qualified student to compete in the national competition. Minimum eligibility criteria for nominees are:
- Full-time enrollment for the upcoming fall and spring semesters
- Undergraduate hospitality management major
- Minimum overall GPA of 3.5 or higher
- U.S. citizenship or permenent residency
First-place winner receives a $5,000 scholarship
Second-place receives $3,000
Third-place receives $2,000
Packard Scholarships are School Nominated which means students are nominated by their respective schools. If you're attending a Foundation-affiliated four-year school, request nomination through AH&LEF's Designated Contact, or contact Kelsey Allagood at 202-289-3139 / firstname.lastname@example.org or Michelle Poinelli at 202-289-3181 / email@example.com for more information.
All student nominees must complete all sections of the AH&LEF Scholarship Application including Appendix A which requires a recommendation letter from both an employer and instructor. Additionally, under separate cover, participating schools are required to send a nomination form confirming their nominees. AH&LEF will not consider applicants for this competition without nomination verification from their respective schools. AH&LEF academic scholarship applications are only accepted from January 1 to May 1 each year. Please note that any applications received from May 2 through December 31 will not be reviewed because the information provided will be outdated for the next school.
Currently 76 universities and colleges are affiliated with AH&LEF and qualify as a four-year school. Click here to view the list of eligible Packard nomination schools.

"I am honored to be awarded the Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship. Mr. Packard was a hotelier whose work extended over a period of 30 years. To be given this gift in his name is humbling.
This award has more than just monetary value to me; it is the faith you have put in me that speaks thousands. Thus I am even more motivated to continue pursuing my goals, because your foundation has also entrusted me to do so."
