Steve Hymans Extended Stay Scholarship

This scholarship honors Steve Hymans, a 25-year veteran of the hospitality industry and one of the extended stay segment's most knowledgeable and experienced professionals.  He held the position of vice president of the southeast region of Hyatt Select Hotels and its AmeriSuites and Summerfield Suites brands from September 2005, until his death in March 2006.  Previously, Hymans worked for the Hawthorn Suites brand of US Franchise Systems and was instrumental in a decade of managing its growth and development.  A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., Hymans attended Michigan State University.  This scholarship was established by the AH&LA Extended Stay Council to educate students about the needs, interests, and concerns of the extended stay segment. More than $115,000 was contributed by Steve's friends, colleagues, and family to permanently endow the fund.

Application Process

Steve Hymans Extended Stay Scholarship is School Nominated, which means students are selected by their respective school -- not by the Foundation. In 2010 Michigan State University has been selected to be the receipent of the Steve Hymans funds. If you attend Michigan State, you can request nomination through AH&LEF's Designated Contact Person, or contact Christa Boatman at 202-289-3139 / cboatman@ahlef.org or Michelle Poinelliat 202-289-3181 / mpoinelli@ahlef.org for more information.

All student nominees must complete sections 1-3 and 8 of the AH&LEF Scholarship Application. Additionally, under separate cover, participating schools are required to send a nomination form confirming their nominees and providing suggested award amounts. AH&LEF will not consider applicants for these awards without verification from their respective schools. AH&LEF academic scholarship applications are only accepted from January 1 to May 1 each year. Please note that any applications received from May 2 through December 31 will not be reviewed because the information provided will be outdated for the next school year.
