1998, 2001, 2004 Lodging Surveys

RealTime Hotel Reports, Inc., chosen through an RFP after a request by AH&LEF in 1997, conducted the 1998 and 2001 surveys to examine trends in the industry. Smith Travel Research conducted the 2004 and 2006 surveys.

Energy Management and Conservation Guide

Funded by AH&LEF in 2001 and developed in response to industry-wide concerns about rising energy costs and usage, the guide served as a tool for properties to review and evaluate usage and incorporate strategies for energy reduction. A series of seminars, also funded by AH&LEF, was de-veloped with AH&LA partner state associations in conjunction with the publication.

In February 1999, the Foundation began providing funds to outsource AH&LA's biannual compensation survey. Two studies were produced — one in 2000 and the second in 2002.

With funding from AH&LEF, AH&LA's Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Task Force Committee and AH&LA's Regulatory Affairs Department surveyed AH&LA member properties and various organiza-tions that represent people with disabilities in 1998. The report was re-leased to help hoteliers in their continuing efforts to reduce barriers for travelers with disabilities, as well as provided written comments to the Federal Access Board's 1999 proposed rule making and modification to the ADA Accessibility Guidelines.

1997 Turnover and Diversity in the Lodging Industry

This study, authored by Robert H. Woods, Ph.D., Michael Sciarini, Ph.D., and William Heck, was conducted over a three-year period with nearly 4,000 properties supplying turnover data and 2,400 properties providing diversity information. An updated survey compiling 2003 data was conducted in 2004.

1997 Impact of Room Tax Increases on the Lodging Industry

The Foundation funded the first study of its kind concerning the impact of room taxes on the lodging industry, which documents the effect of room tax increases on occupancy rate and employment. An updated study was funded in 2003.

A Guide to Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Lodging Industry

Authored by Ray Ellis, CHE, CHTP, CLSD, from the Loss Prevention Management Institute of the University of Houston in 1996, this guide provided an easily understood “translation” of legislative mandates into lodging industry jargon, including a list of requirements by department and what the employer is required to do when developing a program for compliance.
