Professional Development Scholarships

Perfect for individuals currently working at a hotel property who want to advance their career by growing their industry knowledge or skill set, AH&LEF's professional development scholarships provide assistance for distance learning courses and professional certification. Application deadlines are quarterly: January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1.

Ecolab Professional Development Scholarship

Offered to hospitality professionals seeking certification through the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI) in the following operational areas:

American Express Professional Development Scholarship

Offered for enrollment in any Professional Certification or Distance Learning Program offered through the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Working a minimum of 35 hours per week at an AH&LA member hotel with at least 12 months' hotel experience.
  • If applying for a certification you must qualify for it (qualifications will vary depending upon certification).  EI will determine the applicant's eligibility for certification.

Scholarship Awards

Scholarships for certification will cover the cost of the certification study guide (if applicable), examination fee, and certification fee. Scholarships for distance learning programs will be forwarded one course at a time. Course completion is required before the next course is sent. AH&LEF will reimburse EI directly for the costs of all professional development scholarships.

Application Process

Applicants must complete all sections of the AH&LEF Professional Development Scholarship Application. In order to be considered for an award, applicants must attach/submit the appropriate EI distance learning enrollment form or professional certification form. Applicants will be evaluated according to industry-related work experience; professional, community, and extracurricular activities; and personal attributes, including career goals and their response to the essay question. Scholarships are awarded on a quarterly basis, with application deadline dates of January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. Only complete applications will be reviewed. Applicants will be notified within 30 days after application.
